A specialized healthcare and awareness camp was recently held at Dhaka’s Tejgaon Railway Station to support vulnerable street children. Organized by the non-governmental development organization LEEDO (Local Education and Economic Development Organization) at the Khelaghar Samaj Kalyan Sangha premises, the event brought together over 100 underprivileged children to deliver vital medical care and educational outreach on child rights.

The initiative combined essential healthcare services with interactive social awareness activities. Experienced doctors conducted medical checkups for children suffering from malnutrition and prevalent skin conditions, providing free prescription medications and nutritious food packages. To educate the children on self-protection, child rights, and avoiding physical or sexual abuse, the organizers hosted engaging storytelling sessions alongside folk music performances by LEEDO’s child artists using traditional instruments like dhols and dotaras.

The event highlighted pressing national concerns regarding child welfare, referencing UNICEF data indicating that 51 percent of girls in Bangladesh are married before age 18, as well as reporting from Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) that over 1,000 children experience abuse annually. Joining the event virtually, LEEDO Founder and Executive Director Forhad Hossain, alongside local dignitaries and civil society representatives, emphasized the need for joint community and legal action to protect rootless children, prevent child marriage, and keep youth safe from drug abuse.
